Would it be a worthwhile purchase to get a Limelight?

I just want to know other teams’ experiences with using the camera.

I’ve never used a LimeLight personally, but in my experience and research about it, this is the conclusion I came to:

There’s nothing magical about LimeLight, but it can be useful.

Let me elaborate:

It is totally possible to do vision with open source, cheap hardware. I heard that WPI has even released an image for a Raspberry Pi that includes OpenCV preinstalled, meaning you could build vision stuff for under $50.

That being said, you’ll require your programming team to devote a significant amount of time to do that. On that front, LimeLight is a cheaper option on time, since it does a lot of the dirty work for you. It’s a judgement your team has to make for themselves about what makes the most sense.

If budget on the robot was a concern, it’s easier to use a limelight this year due to the budget limit being raised by $1,000.

Yes. Post about it here: Kickoff Release of WPILib FRCVision Raspberry Pi image
