WPILib Installer 2019 throwing error (Windows 10)

I downloaded the official x64 WPILib and VSCode Installer from the WPILib Github page for Windows 10. However, when I run the .exe after extracting the zip, and I click Download for VSCode, the installer throws an error that says “Unhandled exception has ovvurred in your application. Object reference not set to an instance of an object.” Clicking details shows me the debug log for the process:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

JIT Debugging
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

I’ve tried restarting my computer and redownloading the installer, but the error persists. Please help!!

Is this a new computer for doing FRC stuff from? Have you uninstalled last years software if it’s not?

Yeah, I’ve uninstalled last year’s wpilib installation

Are you connected to the internet? Are you behind a proxy or something that could be blocking or redirecting the vscode download? Can you download vscode manually? https://vscode-update.azurewebsites.net/1.30.1/win32-x64-archive/stable

dang… was hoping for a simple one.

Ok what about installing VSCode first. Which was how my machine was. Then run the WPI Installer. On my machine it saw that VS Code was already installed, and greyed out the VS Code install.

Ok, I’ve installed VSCode using the link from @Joe_Ross . When I clicked select already installed vscode, it lets me select the .zip, but when I select the zip it tells me that it should be named something different and doesn’t let me select it. Nevertheless, I went ahead and completed installation without VSCode. Now how do I get the WPILib to work in the VSCode that I installed separately?

if you check out the folder

C:\Users\Public\frc2019\vsCodeExtenstion\

Open VS Code, click Extensions from the left toolbar. There should be 3 little dots, under the word debug on the main menu. Click those 3 dots and drop down to “Install from VSIX” . Drill down to that folder path C:\Users\Public\frc2019\vsCodeExtenstion\ and install.

Should be good to go

Thank you so much! I finally got it working.
