So… Xerox is in the pits right now. Their stock is at about $9.00, from
$30.00 or so earlier this year. they’re cutting $1 billion (i think) in costs…
Are they going to pull out of FIRST at least for the time being?
PARC, the division that sponsors my old team is going to be sold off
partially, so that someone can bring all of their innovations to market.
if you don’t know, PARC invented the mouse, the GUI, ether-net,
laser printing, WYSIWYG, and on and on.
anyways, anyone have any idea what’ll happen with xerox and FIRST?

At least from what I’ve seen in Rochester, Xerox is staying in FIRST. The X-Cats still seem to be kicking up here. I think Paul Allaire had a big influence on encouraging the company with regards to FIRST (he was the former chariman of FIRST and of Xerox). Basically, at best I can say my guess is that they’re staying in it. I believe a lot of the problems with the stock price at least were the rumors that Xerox was filing for bankruptcy (they’re not). And Xerox will only sell PARC if they can find a buyer (remember not much of what PARC invented was ever marketed by Xerox).

PARC will be sold off partially so that the new ‘co’-owner can bring PARC’s
innovations to market (because Xerox headquarters never wanted to). imagine
what it would have been like for Xerox if they had ventured into all of PARC’s
endeavors… especially the GUI.
Anyway, i sure hopw the X-Cats stay alive. Does Paul Allaire know about the
other team that Xerox supports on the west coast? (my former team, GRT)…

I am really grateful that in 1994, Xerox produced a ‘Yearbook’ of all 40+ FIRST teams that was then distributed to every student that participated that year (free of charge). Back then, Woodie needed a ‘staff’ shirt to be recognized and his hair was a bit shorter. (see page one if you have a copy). This was the first year that I dove into the FIRST experience and the book was the icing on the cake.

From the X-Cats team leaders for the 2001 FIRST year, the X-Cats will be involved. Our team leaders have worked hard to keep FIRST in Xerox and it has certainly proved to work. The only difference between this year and last year is funding. We have money for the essentials (Travel, parts, etc.) but we will have to keep our coffee and Mt. Dew intake low for the year. Thanks for your thoughts,
