Hi all,
I was wondering if zip ties would count as fasteners. We were wondering if we could use these to mount electronics, if not, what would you guys suggest?
Thanks,
Scott

Zip Tie are great fasteners, and you can use them as to mount electronics if you want to…
But I wonder if there are better ways. Depend on what you are mounting. if you are using them to fasten wires all over the robot, they are great choice. But if you are mounting electronics like speed controller, or fuse box… That I will leave to the electronics expert to answer.
Check this thread out for information on Mounting Electronics like speed controllers and such.
Ken, thanks, but my team was going to use zip ties to mount the electrical wires, etc…
They seem stuck on that, so, does anyone know the answer?
Thanks again,
Scott

Yes, zip tie are considered Fasteners by FIRST. You may use any amount and any size you want to fasten down the electronics. There shouldn’t be any problem.
If you need something to tie wires, but don’t want something so permanant *yeah, i know you can cut them, you should use those velcro strips to wrap things…Works well.
Scott,
What exactly are you calling “zip ties”? In Chicago, the ties at grocery stores that have a piece of wire between two pieces of tape are called “zip ties”. If this is what you are referring to, I would recommend against using them due to the danger of having that wire find it’s way into electronics and motors. If you are using nylon wire ties or TyWrap brand ties than have fun, we use them for just about everything including wire management.
Zip tie = cable tie = tie wrap = bar lok
These things are just wonderful for your robot.
Can there possibly be any more names for these littie guys?
Chew toys?
I always find my self chewing on the ends of the things.
Hey, it beats chewing all my pens to oblivion…

Zip ties seem to be working great for tying your hair backhttp://team.deanzarobotics.com/icon16.gif ((<-it’s a sweatdrop, not a tear!!!))
My Mom is braiding my hair right now, and ending each braid with a zip tie. I think we’ll do our hair with zip ties at the Regionals we go to!!!

Zip ties are God’s answer to the no duct tape rule. It’s as simple as that.
If we couldn’t use zip ties for anything, I think I would seriously cry!
So yes, you can use zip-ties as they count for fasteners.
Radiant Phoenix - I love the hair! Very cute I’ve used zip ties to pull my hair back into a ponytail while working last minute on our robot (or when a hairtie breaks!!) … You have to be really careful cutting them out of your hair if they’re really high up, heehee!
(and last but not least)
Ken - the guys at Home Depot know “zip ties” as “tie straps” so there’s another name for you!
Have fun,
Katie

We are using tie-wraps to hold our electronics to a piece of Lexan, and it is working out just great.
Saves weight, and is easy to assemble. (no worry of nuits and washers falling off either)
I figured that if Tie-wraps can be used by police as handcuffs, they can be used in place of a screw and nut. (they are tough)
