Zombie Season for Infinite Recharge

I am an optimist but I’m pretty sure that the 2020 game is dead. There are going to be many discussions later on about how we can recover. This will be a huge financial hit to FIRST HQ, all the state and local organizations, and to the teams who have paid registration fees that will not be refunded. If FRC is to carry forward I think that we need to look at the fall as a possible help. Maybe off season events that are already established taking the place of canceled regionals and districts? Maybe new off season events being started? Maybe IRI and Chezy taking the place of Champs? What do y’all think? This is a fun game and there are robots ready to play. I don’t want it to stay dead. Maybe a zombie season should become our focus once we know our communities are safe.

I’m not sure if it would be responsible for off season events to move into the regular season general timeline. The whole reason events are being postponed is to prevent the spread of this virus.

The intent would be to have ‘regular season’ events outside of the regular season time frame.

I don’t think that’s what he’s suggesting… Rather than play both official and off-season events in the fall, just do one. The off-season events are scheduled and have venues already for the fall - so use those as a replacement for the regular season events. Essentially move the regular season event to the time and location of the existing off-season event.

This could be a boost to help start off-season events in areas that typically haven’t had them, giving them extra incentive (and help from FIRST/planning committees?) to get one started to take the place of a missed regional/district event.

Ahhh that makes a lot more sense

Yeah LOL, I didn’t mean to suggest that we start playing alleyball with robots right now. But I have an off-season scheduled in September, and I’m saying events like that might play a larger role now.

From FIRSTWAs QA yesterday, it sounds like this is already being explored for PNW events.

I think that mrnoble was talking about that metaphorically. PNW is talking about it literally.

PS I also would not considered PNW events to be a zombie season since they will be run in an official capacity.

Rather than cancelling the season, I would like to see it extended into the summer. Allow recently graduated seniors to compete in the extended season.

Then the logistics: Will the current venues still be available for the delayed regions/district events? If not, can a suitable replacement be booked with minimal notice? Will hotel accommodations near the venue be easy to find? etc…

But, I honestly don’t see this happening.

FIRST should at least try to FULLSEND the competitions with no spectators and only DriveTeam/Engineers before the entirety of Infinite Recharge gets FRICKED, but I think that Coronavirus is a serious issue and we all need to be prepared…

FIRST has very little say in the competitions that have been canceled or postponed, or the way teams and districts decide to allow or not. Some venues might require or allow your idea, and others will say yes or no to any event at all happening.
