Hello! My name Rebecca, and I am currently in my Freshman year of high school. I’ve been involved with FIRST for nearly three years now, one year in FLL and two in FRC, and I can say that it has changed my life in the best of ways.
I became a member of FIRST in seventh grade when I joined my school’s Lego League team. Unlike most, my school deemed FLL a Junior High activity and I unfortunately could join until 7th grade. As we were a small team I ended doing a variety of things, but I mainly did programming and building. After the season was over I was approached by the head mentor of my school’s FRC team, and was asked to join the team a year early as a programmer.
Over the summer I took online courses to learn Java, as I had only knew block based coding from FLL. I even went to two off-season events to meet the team and become familiar with FRC.
Honestly it was kind of scary at first, I was the youngest member, as well as one of the few girls on the team and the only female programmer. But over time I grew really close to my team and I made a lot of new friends.
Though, I technically was a programmer, I also spent a lot of time with the build team. Our team was comprised of around twenty people so many of us can easily help in different areas. For example many of our builders are also scouts, some of our drivers help the Chairman’s team with writing and because us programmers have to make sure our code doesn’t make the robot spin in circles for the entire autonomous period, we know how wire up a robot and make testable parts.
Over the 2019 season we went to two regionals, placing 8th and then 2nd, earning ourselves a wild card to worlds. In Detroit we were placed in the Carson Division and ended up in 7th place.
This year, we are off to a great start again, and regionals are coming up soon! I hope to see some awesome robots this year.
